Anaemic consumer spending will be the main drag on Croatia's economic recovery over the next few years,
and underpins our view that the economy is one of the least attractive in the EU. We expect retail sales
growth to remain subdued, as disposable incomes continue to fall amidst declining wages, painfully high
unemployment (19.6% in May) and still-high household indebtedness. These factors underpin our view that
consumer confidence will remain in the doldrums for the foreseeable future, with households delaying big
spending decisions amidst the uncertain economic environment.
