Coffee declined by 1% in total volume terms in 2012. The decline was mainly a result of maturity in combination with high consumer prices. Commodity prices rose considerably in 2010 and 2011, and as prices did not decline radically in 2012, consumer prices were at record high levels which made some consumers cut down on consumption. The uncertain economic situation in 2012 following the euro-zone debt crisis also resulted in a more cautious consumer base.
