Botswana Food and Drink Report Q3 2013
BMI View: Private consumption growth came in at an anaemic 1.1% in 2012 (just below BMI's estimate of 1.3%) and while we forecast a slight improvement in 2013 to 2.1%. That said, we expect conditions for households to remain challenging over the medium term as the impact of public sector wage cuts and high unemployment continue to take their toll. This ties into our wider view in the Food & Drink team that Botswana is not among the region's most attractive markets from a fundamental industry perspective for consumer goods companies looking for strong growth opportunities in industries such as soft drinks and beer primarily due to the small size of the population relative to a lot of Sub-Saharan African countries.
¦ Total food consumption growth (local currency): 8.2% in 2013. Compound annual growth rate to 2017: 8.4%.
¦ Beer sales growth (local currency): 2.0% in 2013. Compound annual growth rate to 2017: 3.3%.
