Under Iran's Islamic law, the consumption of alcohol in any form is totally forbidden. There has been a complete ban on sales, production, importation and distribution of alcoholic beer since 1979 when the country's Islamic government came to power. Before the Islamic Revolution, there were two key companies operating in beer, with Shams and Star Iran producing alcoholic beer. However, these companies were seized by the new Islamic government in 1979.
