Active & Intelligent Packaging NEW US industry forecasts for 2015 & 2020
Report description
This study examines the market for active and intelligent packaging in the United States. Active packaging is broadly defined as packaging that performs a function beyond the protection and identification of its contents. Intelligent packaging refers to packaging technology that provides external data and/or relays information relative to the status of the contents. Product segments covered include gas scavengers, corrosion control packaging, moisture control packaging, susceptor packaging, other active packaging (e.g., antimicrobial packaging, flavor and fragrance control packaging, self-venting and air-releasing packaging), time-temperature indicators (TTIs) and other intelligent packaging (e.g., color changing packaging, pharmaceutical compliance packaging, assistive packaging and mobile phone-enabled interactive packaging). Markets for these products include food, beverages, primary metals, pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles, electronics and other (e.g., industrial machinery, military equipment and supplies, diagnostic and medical equipment, aerospace products, cosmetics and toiletries, photographic and x-ray film, cut flowers and metal packaging). Excluded from this study are radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, data loggers, readers, software and similar products serving security and supply chain tracking and monitoring functions. However, RFID tags used for diagnostic or informational functions are included. Also excluded are TTIs for nonpackaging uses, such as temperature testing labels for industrial equipment.
Historical data (2000, 2005, 2010) and forecasts for 2015 and 2020 are provided for active and intelligent packaging demand (i.e., consumption) in current dollars (including inflation). “Demand” (or sales, apparent consumption) is defined as all shipments from US plants, plus imports, minus exports. The term “shipment” includes production from all US manufacturing establishments that is then shipped to both US and foreign markets. In addition, the key strategic variables affecting the active and intelligent packaging industry are discussed, and the industry’s key players are identified and profiled. US market share is also presented. The entire study is framed within the active and intelligent packaging market’s demographic, economic, regulatory and technological environments.
Throughout this study, demand is related to various indicators for comparative purposes and to facilitate further analysis. Tabular details may not add to totals due to rounding, and calculated ratios reflect unrounded numbers. Corporate information sources include annual reports, SEC Form 10-K filings, product catalogs and other company information. Corporate sales figures and active and intelligent packaging-related sales represent estimates based on consultation with multiple sources. Macroeconomic indicators presented in this study were obtained from The Freedonia Group Consensus Forecasts dated April 2011. Due to the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ use of chain weighted price indices, inflation-adjusted Gross Domestic Product components (2005 dollars) do not add to the total.
