Other lessons are emerging too from the crucible of harder economic times and the accompanying capital drought. Although it was becoming fashionable to malign the ranks of independent distributors for exacting increasingly onerous contracts even as they underperformed ("they don't build brands any more, they're just an overpriced delivery system" is the gibe), poor experiences with the range of alternatives - from direct shipping to "broadliners" such as brokers and United Natural Foods in the natural channel - has prompted a rethinking.

  • True, as brands have fled to the major bottling and beer systems at an earlier and earlier stage of their development, DSD houses have sought to write contracts that guarantee them their proper reward by way of the buyout terms. But the better ones continue to merchandise brands at the shelf, rather than letting them languish at the whim of understaffed retailers and calculating rivals.
  • And while the ranks of independent DSD had been on a sharp decline for decades, there are some signs that the trend has been reversing, at least in some key, underserved metropolitan areas like New York. Beer wholesalers, seeing prospects clouded for their core beer brands, were increasingly receptive to carrying non-alcoholic (NA) brands, although the explosion in craft beers lately has captured greater attention than NAs.
  • Red Bull distributors, paranoid about a series of terminations that suggest the energy drink company may be planning down the line to distribute its brand itself, have been establishing divisions with non-Red Bull products.
  • Dairy distributors, facing challenging trends on milk as the biggest retailers increasingly receive their inventory directly from the dairies, have been establishing divisions for shelf-stable brands like teas and energy drinks.
  • And seeing a void, energetic entrepreneurs have been opening modest operations capable of seeding a handful of brands at the right retail accounts. It seems to presage a swing of sentiment back toward the DSD channel, even if not always to Snapple distributors and other established independent DSD accounts. As noted, parsimonious entrepreneurs often have proved willing to experiment with unorthodox DSD options like ice cream and snack distributors as a way to get DSD coverage without the contractual entanglements and expense of conventional DSD houses.
  • Not least, the Coke, Pepsi and DPS systems have been opening their doors to a limited number of allied brands, even as Coke has experimented with developing some of its newer brands, such as illycaffe coffees with independent distributors who are better attuned to the demands of fledgling brands than their own bottlers.
