Report description

ACTION, PACKED.

Get the facts and find out what's next for this dynamic marketplace where a plethora of new players strive to grow and hope to make inroads against the industry leaders. This report profiles the top companies and brands and examines trends and issues impacting the market. It covers regional markets, packaging, distribution, advertising and demographics. New for 2013: Now offers quarterly growth data.

Report extract:

A significant amount of energy drink sales take place in on-premise establishments.

  • As discussed in Chapter 5, part of Red Bull's marketing strategy has entailed gaining entrée into trendy bars and nightclubs. More recently, Monster has used its on-premise distribution pact with Anheuser-Busch to try to catch up to Red Bull.
  • Historically, Coke and Pepsi products dominated that channel's liquid refreshment beverage menus. But consumer demand for new beverages and energy drink suppliers' aggressiveness made in-roads into various foodservice areas.
  • Unlike fast food chains and institutions, upscale salad and sandwich shops readily embraced higher-priced bottled beverages. As a sub-channel, these chains have been growing in numbers of locations and in dollars.
  • In 2011, energy drinks in foodservice grew by 16.5%, which slightly lagged the overall energy drink market. Foodservice thus accounted for 13.0% of energy drink volume, down from 2010's 13.1%.

Mass merchandisers, of which Wal-Mart is the main component, have become increasingly popular because, as the name implies, they carry a large variety of products.

  • Varied merchandising methods encourage impulse and stock-up sales from end-of-aisle displays of full cases or multipacks, dry grocery shelves of multipacks and singles, and coolers of bottles/cans chilled for immediate consumption.
  • Not only is Wal-Mart the biggest mass merchandiser, it also has the most developed beverage program.
  • Nonetheless, energy drinks face the same challenges as in supermarkets - principally, the take-home nature of the channel.
