Report description

ONGOING EVOLUTION.

This comprehensive study of the leading beverage category examines trends and top companies' strategies, providing up-to-date statistics and detailed analysis of leading brands, packaging, channels of distribution, regional markets, pricing, demographics, advertising, five-year growth projections and more. New for 2013: Now offers quarterly growth data.

Report extract:

  • Washington State's Talking Rain has toiled in the New Age beverage segment for more than 20 years, but never had a hit until Sparkling ICE emerged as a sleeper hit.
  • The Sparkling ICE line is a zero-calorie blend of sparkling spring water, vitamins and green tea extract. It is sweetened with Splenda and packaged in skinny, straight-walled 17-ounce and 1-liter PET bottles, with a picture of fruit trapped inside an ice cube on the transparent label.
  • In 2013, in the wake of the unexpected success of Sparkling ICE brand, Coke re-visioned Fruitwater as a similar product - namely, carbonated, zero-calorie water sweetened with Splenda. The drink is available in stylish looking 0.5-liter PET bottles in Lemon-Lime, Black Raspberry, Strawberry Kiwi, Orange Mango and Watermelon Punch flavors. A rash of other copycats has emerged in the sweetened sparkling water segment, including several private labels.
  • The unsweetened seltzer segment, as well as sparkling waters, has enjoyed growth of late as well. Since these beverages are fizzy just like CSDs, it suggests that a small, but growing, segment of the population are moving to healthier beverage options without foregoing bubbles altogether.

CSDs have declined for many years and 2013 has been no exception. Goldman Sachs analyst Judy Hong called 2013 the "worst year for CSDs in nearly 25 years."

  • Bad weather in the spring and summer has had an impact on volumes, but the problems go beyond that. One such troubling sign is the relatively poor performance of diet CSDs of late. The most feasible explanation seems to be that consumers are growing more wary of the artificial sweeteners in diet CSDs - an observation echoed by the CEOs of Dr Pepper Snapple and PepsiCo. There has also been a perceived delay in the launch of next-generation diets employing natural sweeteners, which may have exacerbated consumers' feeling of cognitive dissonance between what is and what should already be.
  • In her 2013 survey of c-stores pertaining to Labor Day weekend, Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog noted several trends, including Coke's aggressive pricing - which has forced PepsiCo to follow suit. She also noted that energy drinks had rebounded from the negative press the segment endured earlier in the year and echoed the view that diet CSD sales were suffering.
