Report extract:
A number of factors have contributed to milk's stagnation in the Canadian beverage marketplace, posing significant challenges to dairy marketers.
- Milk's status as a "wholesome" drink might actually work against it in the eyes of the youth market, especially when parents aren't around - such as at school or other locations where vending machines abound.
- On the other hand, milk is perceived as not healthy enough for many adult consumers who are turned off by the high fat content of even 1% milk, which actually gets 20.5% of its calories from fat.
- There are also fewer children in Canada than a generation or two ago, and those children have far more snack-time beverage options (especially sports and energy drinks) than in years past.
- Non-dairy "milk" made from soy, rice and hemp has taken away market share. So far, their combined share is small, but it is growing each year.
In order to get more kids drinking milk rather than less nutritional beverages at school, the BC (British Columbia) Dairy Foundation partnered with BC Agriculture in the Classroom to launch the Fridges in Schools Program in August 2006.
- The program enables British Columbia schools that do not have access to refrigeration to purchase of refrigerators. In its first year, more than 70 fridges were delivered to schools registered in the Elementary School Milk program.
- Elementary schools are eligible to participate if they offer white and/or chocolate milk at least three times per week at school. Parents, however, foot the bill for the milk that is delivered to their children's schools.
- The $850,000, three-year program saw fridges placed in roughly 700 schools by the end of 2009.
- Schools still without refrigerators could apply for $1,000 grants from ActNow BC, a government-sponsored health initiative, to buy refrigerators in 2010.
