2012 Soy & Other Dairy Alternative Beverages in the U.S.
Report description
MORE THAN JUST SOY.
This report on alternatives to fluid milk considers a rapidly evolving market, providing current statistics and perspective on what the future holds for soymilk and other soy beverages as they become more entrenched in the mainstream market. It includes discussion and data relating to packaging, flavors, advertising expenditures and demographics as well as profiles of the leading companies and a chapter on dairy alternatives including almond and rice milk. New For 2012: Now covers coconut milk.
Report extract:
Almondmilk is not the province of environmentalists and raw-foodists convinced that soymilk has become too mainstream. Indeed, the leading player in the soymilk arena also fielded almondmilk under its prominent dairy alternative brand name.
- The WhiteWave subsidiary of Dean Foods applied the Silk trademark to a four-flavor line of almond-based beverages. The Silk Pure Almond line consists of Original, Unsweetened, Dark Chocolate and Vanilla.
- As it does with its many varieties of soymilk, Dean prefers to put its Silk almondmilk in gable-top cartons intended for the dairy case rather than the aseptic boxes that once characterized the dairy alternative sector.
Sacramento, California-based Blue Diamond Growers, a cooperative of approximately 3,000 almond growers, developed several refrigerated and shelf-stable almondmilk varieties in its Almond Breeze line.
- Refrigerated flavors, which Blue Diamond packages in half-gallon paperboard carton, include Original, Original Unsweetened, Chocolate, Vanilla and Vanilla Unsweetened.
- It also put the same quintet in 32-ounce aseptic packages. (It made 64-ounce sizes available too.)
- Blue Diamond declares that Almond Breeze contains none of the following: casein, cholesterol, dairy, eggs, gluten, lactose, monosodium glutamate, peanuts, saturated fat or soy. Beyond almondmilk, Blue Diamond designed a product group consisting of almonds for snacking and for cooking and baking as well as chips and crackers made with the nut.
Indeed, the commonness of almonds, a result of not-beverage-exclusive activities by entities like Blue Diamond, may explain the type of growth they've achieved that less familiar propositions like hempmilk have yet to attain.
- Almonds may pack calcium and other beneficial nutrients, be relatively low in calories and have a variety of uses, as marketers of almond-based beverages contend, but they are also a known quantity.
- With almonds, people know whether they like the taste - something that can't always be said of other grains, nuts and seeds used in competing dairy alternative beverages.
