2012 Bottled Water in the U.S.
Report description
CLEARLY COMPLEX.
Beverage Marketing's definitive report on the second largest beverage category by volume considers every aspect of this increasingly controversial category and its competitive circumstances. Its detailed analysis covers regional and state markets as well as packaging, distribution, advertising, demographics and more.
Report Extract:
Bottled water, which chugged along with 14 straight years of 7%-plus growth, began to slow down in 2007, when volume grew by a mere 6.1%. In 2008 and 2009, exacerbated by the economic downturn and a growing eco-consciousness, bottled water actually declined for the first time ever.
- According to Corporate Accountability International, which started its Think Outside the Bottle advocacy campaign in 2006, more than 100 cities/towns and five states have curtailed spending on bottled water. CAI claims that cities spend $70 million in disposing of plastic bottles, not including collection costs.
- In June 2007, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order prohibiting city departments from using funds to purchase bottled water for their employees (who now drink filtered tap water). In 2008, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay signed an executive order prohibiting city agencies under his control to buy bottled water except in emergencies.
- Although a proposed ban on the sale of bottled water in Concord, Massachusetts (in the whole town, not just in government buildings), was narrowly defeated in 2011, said bill passed (also by a narrow margin) in 2012, making Concord the first municipality to implement such as sweeping law. The law would not go into effect until the beginning of 2013, pending approval by the state's attorney general.
- In 2012, the National Park Service approved the cessation of bottled water sales at the Grand Canyon in order to reduce litter after an earlier effort to institute a ban was reportedly shelved at the behest of Coca-Cola Company (a charge which the parties deny).
- More than a dozen universities have placed bans on bottled water sales as well. These include College of St. Benedict, Macalester College, Seattle University and Washington University (St. Louis). The latest to announce bans have been Loyola University's Chicago campuses and the University of Vermont. In the latter case, the university has mandated that vending machines contain one-third healthy beverages, which the IBWA dubs as ironic since what beverage is healthier than bottled water?
- Colleges, and even airports (San Francisco and Portland), have installed so-called hydration stations, which accommodate the filling of reusable bottles more effectively than traditional water fountains. Some institutions have even handed out free stainless steel bottles to its students.
- New York City Mayor Bloomberg, who has made recent headlines for his attack on carbonated soft drinks, had earlier emerged as a bottled water critic - funding advertising campaigns promoting the high quality of NYC tap water.
