This comprehensive study looks at worldwide, continent and country bottled water trends. It discusses the leading companies’ brands and strategies. It also includes five-year projections.
Report extract:
Not surprisingly, given the success enjoyed by the bottled water category, large multinational beverage companies are rapidly building their global water portfolios in an attempt to ride the wave of profits.
- For many years, Switzerland-based Nestlé and French company Danone were the unchallenged leaders of the bottled water pack, with the former generally outselling the latter.
- The two bottled water giants are now facing the challenge of the two soft drink kings, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, both of whom are increasingly devoted to the bottled water business both in the U.S. and abroad.
- These four international bottled water giants are in a class by themselves in terms of global presence and volume.
- However, on a country-by-country basis, many local brands still find themselves as market leaders.
Danone's water strategy is centered on the strength of a few mega-brands, as opposed to Nestlé's more balanced approach.
- Some of the largest bottled water brands in the world in terms of sheer volume belong to Danone - e.g., Indonesia's Aqua, global brands Evian and Volvic and Mexico's Pureza.
- If bigger means better, Danone would certainly be the clear winner over Nestlé. However, Nestlé's more diversified brand portfolio provides it with a competitive advantage over Danone in the more fragmented, mature and complex North American and European markets.
- Generally speaking, Nestlé's strategy has focused on maintaining leadership in its core markets of the U.S., France, Italy and Germany, while using its global Nestlé Pure Life brand to gain scale and leverage in the developing world and Nestlé Aquarel to penetrate Europe.
- Aside from the company's five global flagship brands - Perrier, Vittel, San Pellegrino, Acqua Panna and Contrex - the newer Aquarel and Pure Life mark a shift in the company attitude in favor of developing Nestlé branded global labels.
- Nestlé has also built a portfolio of local brands catering to the individual needs of each market. Most of the company's 60-plus water brands are local.
