Report Abstract:

Since fruit beverages are made from an agricultural product, the vicissitudes of weather play a role - particularly in Florida, where most of the chilled, RTS orange and grapefruit juice in the U.S. is produced.

" In 2010/2011, despite some icy temperatures, the amount of Florida oranges grew by 4% to 139 million boxes, according to the final forecast by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Even so, the 2009/2010 totals had been among the lowest in recent years, meaning prices continued to rise.
" As a result, Coca-Cola announced that it would hike the price of Minute Maid 100% Orange Juice and Simply Orange to retailers by 6% to 9% in April 2010, its first price increase since October 2006. Tropicana followed suit by shrinking the container size of its half-gallon package to 59 ounces (while keeping the price the same) and by increasing the price of its gallon jugs.
" Despite stagnant chilled orange juice consumption, in December 2010, Coke announced it would likely increase Minute Maid and Simply prices by 4% to 8% in 2011. Pepsi announced it would also increase prices by 4% to 8%.
" The main orange juice players have downsized the traditional 64-ounce size to 59 ounces and the 96-ounce size to 89 ounces.
" Conversely, some in the Florida citrus industry complain that powerful retailers are quick to raise the retail price of OJ when orange juice futures rise, but are not as swift to lower the retail price when orange prices dip - thus leading to lower consumption at the expense of retailer profit margin.


OJ's continuing woes have been exacerbated by a finding that orange juice originating in Brazil contains a fungicide not approved by the U.S.

" In December 2011, Coca-Cola alerted the FDA that its juice, as well as that of PepsiCo, contained carbendazim, a fungicide that is banned for use on U.S. citrus trees. Although the levels of carbendazim were found to be low enough not to issue a recall of OJ already on retail shelves, the FDA decided to hold and test all incoming orange juice shipments for presence of the chemical.
" As of April 2012, about 30 shipments of juice from Brazil and Canada (which contains Brazilian oranges) were barred from entry into the U.S. due to the presence of carbendazim. Brazil's orange juice industry has since removed carbendazim as a recommended fungicide.
