RE: UK: Diageo workers to vote on strike
All of the Diageo workforce worldwide are up in arms regarding the second class treatment of the sacked Scottish workers. Shutting the old Kilmarnock site is an act of pure greed. Almost 200years of loyalty and this is how they are repaid. Diageo would not have been the company they are today if it was not for Johnnie Walker's workforce so they are right to demand a fair redundancy package. This company owes them that at least. Diageo put your hand in those deep pockets and show your workforce that you have really appreciated the contribution they have all made to your business.

RE: UK: Diageo workers to vote on strike
Diageo appear to have offered an exceptional redundancy package to employees, bearing in mind that's the same employees who partied inappropriately at the closure of Stathleven and failure to support Bell's or Dewar's workforce. Many in the industry have long memories, voting for industrial action could result in Diageo withdrawing part of package, be sure what you want to vote for.

RE: UK: Diageo workers to vote on strike
Not sure about the fact that Kilmarnock workers partied at the news Strathleven was to close and not Kilmarnock. I was not with the company at that time but any time I have spoken to my longer term colleagues about these closures there has always been a deep sympathy for the workers made redundant. I have no doubt that there are individuals who acted irresponsibly at this time but these people would have been in the minority and are found in every workforce (even in leven now). For what it is worth I can only apologise for there disgusting behaviour.
I will loose my family home if I am made redundant (Even with a good package) so its never been about money for me. I want to stand up to big business and tell them "Practice What You Preach". I have sat through many death by power point presentations forcing me to think this company cared about each and every worker in Diageo. I can now tell you all that we are not all valued and as soon a the company think they can do without you then you are out on your ear. Diageo are all talk and no action. This has been proven now and in the past as Morgan Bell has explained. All Diageo employees need to make as much money as they can before they are bumped too.
Kilmarnock workers know the path that Diageo are going down regarding the bottling of spirit in Scotland. Sheildhall will be next to close, then the Leven super plant. This company's long term plan is to dissociate the "bottling" of Scotch in Scotland but still keep the distilling here. They will slowly head over to China or India to bottle more and more spirit then when they think the time is right they will move all production over there. They will sell the move as (Scotch is still distilled in Scotland as it has been for hundreds of years and will continue to be done that way(because it has to!), the company believe that it can provide the consumer with a product that can compete not only on a quality point but now on a price point in a tough worldwide drinks market. Diageo beleve that in order to provide markets world wide with a competitive priced product we have to make this move in our bottling operations). The future for the whisky industry is in Asia and India. Most of the consumers in these countries need a low cost product to make it affordable. Bottling in Scotland is allot more expensive than it would be in China or India. The wrighting is on the wall, to be able to sell large amounts of Scotch to the every day person in these countries you need to keep the cost per case low. This can only be done if wages are very low i.e. China or India pay rates. Please make this your wakeup call Shieldhall and Leven. You will both need to fight together to keep bottling operations in Scotland. Keep an eye and ear out for any move to increase production overseas. Even better bring back any bottling that is now done overseas. Kilmarnock workers are fighting for our jobs and at worst a very good redundancy package. If we get eather then it will keep the grim reaper from your door a little longer. To keep our Jobs would make Diageo think twice about closing another plant, or getting a good redundancy package might make them think the next closure is not as financially attractive when they take into consideration the redundancy payments they need to make.
DIAGEO ARE DRUNK ON GREED.
Keep Scotch truly Scottish! Don't let Diageo dumb down this industry. I wish you all well for the future and look after any Killie employees who come up to join you. Regards, Kilmarnock Employees and the JWCampaign.

RE: UK: Diageo workers to vote on strike
Why should the Scottish workers be immune to layoffs but not the rest of us? I myself have been with Diageo only 4 years, have been through two restructures, five positions, and jobs based in three cities all over the US. There was no amount of complaining that those who were laid off could do that would have saved their jobs. Diageo is a public company with shareholders who expect us to grow our operating profit every year. Hence the reason for the major 100M pounds savings plan. If someone doesn't like it, he should go work for a smaller company who doesn't have to answer to shareholders. There are many disadvantages to working for a public company, and layoffs are one of them. I am happy to have a job right now but know that at any minute Diageo has the right to let me go.
