In 1961, three major UK brewing and pub-owning companies, Ind Coope, Tetley Walker and Ansells, merged to create Allied Breweries. The company snapped up various brands, and branched into restaurants in 1989 when it acquired Dunkin’ Donuts.

Then, in 1994, Allied acquired Pedro Domecq, a leading spirits producer and marketer in Spain and Mexico. The newly-named Allied Domecq announced its intention to focus on spirits and wine and retailing businesses going forward.

By 2005, Allied had grown to become the world's second-largest spirits group. That year, French drinks giant Pernod Ricard and US consumer group Fortune Brands bought Allied in a deal worth GBP7.4bn.

The two companies carved up the Allied portfolio, with Pernod taking brands including Beefeater gin and Montana wine. Fortune acquired brands including Courvoisier Cognac and Sauza Tequila.
