CHILE: Peru plans international Pisco patent

In a move likely to upset neighbouring Chile, Peru's government has announced plans to apply for an international patent on its national Pisco drink, a grape brandy produced in South America's Andes region. However any patenting effort made by Peru, which producers hope if granted will result in increased exports is expected to draw resistance from Chilean producers who claim it originated in Chile.
CHILE: Vina Miguel Torres exports up by 10%

Chile's Vina Miguel Torres winery has announced a 10% increase in wine exports during the first half of this year, compared to the same period of 2000. Despite falling wine prices, Miguel Torres wines have maintained a relatively high price compared to other Chilean wines. Its average export wines sell for US$30 per 12-bottle crate, while the national average is only US$24 per crate.
