just the Facts – Carlsberg and Chongqing Brewery

Earlier today (4 March), Carlsberg announced its intention to up its stake and take control of Chongqing Brewery in China. Here's a closer look at Carlsberg's presence in China, and Chongqing's position in the country's beer market.

Carlsberg in China

Carlsberg has concentrated its efforts in the west of the country.

  • In Xinjiang, the brewer has 65% ownership of Wusu Xinjiang Beer Group, which has nine breweries
  • In Tibet, Carlsberg owns 33% of Lhasa Brewery, which has one production facility
  • In Qinghai, it has 33% of the Qinghai Huang He Brewery
  • In Gansu, the Lanzhou Group, which is 30% held by Carlsberg, has three breweries
  • In Ningxia, Carlsberg has 70% ownership of Ningxia Group's sole brewery
  • In Yunnan, the company has full control of Yunnan Group and its two breweries
  • Down in the south, in Guangdong, Carlsberg owns one brewery that supplies its namesake beer to all of China and Hong Kong
  • Finally, in the central province of Chongqing, Carlsberg currently holds 29% of Chongqing Brewery and its 11 breweries – it also co-owns 12 production facilities through the JV Chongqing Xinghui Investment Co, which it co-owns with Chongqing Brewery

  • The province of Chongqing is grouped in the south-west China beer market, which accounts for 12% of the country's beer volumes. Also included in the south-west region are the provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Yunnan
  • SABMiller's CRSnow JV is the regional leader, with 24% volume share. While Chongqing Brewery is second, with 19% volume share. Beijing Yanjing Brewey is third, with 18% volume share
  • The Chongqing province accounts for 19% of the volumes in south-west China, with annual volumes of around 10m hectolitres. Sichuan province (40% of the region's volumes) and Guangxi (26% of volumes) are the only provinces larger then Chongqing in the south-west
