On just-drinks last week:
- It was a sad week in wine, as the London International Wine Fair came and went for the last time. The event is being rebadged and rebranded next year, to focus more on the wine market here in the UK. Click here for the full round-up of our coverage of the three days at ExCeL, and click here for my obituary of the international exhibition. And, if you haven't got a subscription to just-drinks yet, head over here for a special offer that we launched to coincide with the fair. The offer runs until the end of the month.
- In soft drinks, a strong leap in Britvic’s profits in the six months to 14 April was clouded by the soft drinks company’s announcement on the same day that it will close three sites and merge its UK and Ireland units. The grim news grabbed the headlines, with several observers suggesting that Britvic’s proposed merger with AG Barr looks more unlikely than ever, as a result. Our deputy editor James Wilmore also spoke to the BBC about the situation
- SABMiller followed its trading update last month with its full-year numbers last week. For just-drinks’ full coverage of the figures, head over here.
- Generating the most traffic among our spirits members was the suggestion last week that the next CEO of Diageo, Ivan Menezes, may look to announce his presence in the role by making a move for the rest of Moet Hennessy. Much as current CEO Paul Walsh, who steps down from the post on 1 July, always said he’d be keen to take LVMH’s stake in the spirits unit, should LVMH offer it up, could Menezes make an approach of his own in the coming months?
Speaking of future CEOs, I’m in Beijing today for Pernod Ricard’s Capital Market Day. Following the day of presentations, I was granted some time with the drinks giant’s future CEO, Alex Ricard. Our exclusive interview will run later this week, once I’ve recovered from the jetlag.
Until next time...
