India and China hold key for blended Scotch growth
Among all the emerging markets, IWSR/just-drinks' latest report, Global market review of blended Scotch whisky - forecasts to 2014, identifies China and India as particularly critical to the future success of the blended Scotch whisky category.
Since 2003, shipments to China have increased from 278,000 nine-litre cases to 1,756,300 cases in 2008. Volumes are forecast to reach 1,766,000 cases in 2010, up from 1,694,800 cases in 2009. The growth in India came off a slightly higher base in 2003 but has been equally impressive. Exports stood at 397,500 cases in 2003, rising to 1,139,000 cases in 2008. UK water coolers
2009 proved to be a mixed year for the UK water cooler industry. Whilst the mature bottled water cooler market continued to witness a decline, mains-fed POU maintained steady growth. With customers continuing to migrate to POU, operators have found it necessary to adapt their businesses to maximise competitiveness. The added pressures of the economic downturn and the absence of a long hot summer made for challenging market conditions. Nevertheless, concerted efforts to maintain high levels of customer service, to promote the hydration benefits of water and to increase focus on profitability boosted the industry over the course of the year.
This brand new report, now in its 19th annual edition, has been fully updated. The report offers you the most comprehensive market figures and in-depth analysis of water cooler trends, with data and analysis coming from a bottom up research process, and from detailed discussions undertaken with industry players.

Coffee and ready-to-drink coffee in the US: the market and opportunities in retail and foodservice
As the US economy slid deeper into recession during 2009, coffee marketers and foodservice operators moved in the opposite direction, digging out of the trench of 2008 with a variety of strategies designed to capitalise on the fact that even upscale coffee is a relatively thrifty luxury that offers comfort during stressful times.
Two success stories were the rebound of Starbucks on the foodservice side and the revitalisation of the former P&G retail coffee portfolio by J. M. Smucker. Although the era when the coffee market grew effortlessly through premiumisation may have ended, such upscale trends as the shifts towards specialty coffee beverages, gourmet beans and ethical consumerism are still clearly in force.
