Wine has been the dominant beverage these past few weeks here at just-drinks. This is something we make no apology for, however, as the sector seems to be hogging the headlines around the world at the moment.

Last week’s announcement by the European Commission that it was looking to reform the continent’s wine sector was the latest development, and one that made the front pages of papers around the continent. While many spectators have carried themselves with an air of ‘schadenfreude’ when it comes to Europe’s wine woes, the collective sigh of relief around the continent that something is finally being done has been deafening.

“This is a great opportunity to put the EU wine sector back at the top where it belongs,” the EU’s Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said last week. “We must not waste it.” This, if anything, shows how on a knife-edge Europe’s wine companies are right now.

In the soft drinks sector, comments from Coke’s chief executive last week about the future for CSDs were either optimistic or pie-in-the-sky, depending on your position. That Neville Isdell believes carbonates still have a wealth of untapped potential to hand is to be applauded or scoffed at. That Coke is also reportedly on the hunt for non-carbonated drinks companies in Europe, however, suggests that Isdell isn’t pinning all his hopes on his flagship brand.
