Top story on just-drinks last week was the announcement of a 'merger' in the US drinks distribution sector. The creation of a new national distribution venture between Southern Wine & Spirits of America and Glazer's Distributors acts as a sign that the consolidation wave will spare no sectors of our industry. While some observers voiced concerns of a possible monopoly in US distribution, we managed to grab an exclusive chat with Southern's president and COO, Wayne Chaplin, who played down those fears. Whether the move is good or bad, the main point is that consolidation is here to stay. Already this year, we've seen Scottish & Newcastle broken up between Carlsberg and Heineken, Vin & Sprit snapped up by Pernod Ricard and InBev swooping for Anheuser-Busch. Feel free to argue all you wish – indeed, we positively encourage it here at just-drinks – but it doesn't look like the consolidation train will come off the rails any time soon. Elsewhere on the site last week, we saw InBev proclaim itself “far from satisfied” with its performance so far this year, while Diageo stood up to the wrath of Ireland's barley farmers. Quiet it may be this August, but colourful it all remains. A lot like some of your press releases, which continue to jolly us along. Do, please, keep them coming. Despite next to no sunshine in the UK last week, however, I'm getting a lovely tan, basking in the glory of a namecheck in The Times. It would appear I have arrived, people – finally.
