Well, well, well. Or, in the first words of one drinks industry insider this morning, “blimey”. There’s nothing like a leisurely start to the week than a news-dry Monday. Today (31 march), however, isn’t quite like that. Pernod Ricard’s victory in the race for Vin & Sprit has put paid to that. And the transaction throws up a load more questions than it does answers. Some of these answers have already started to filter through, thankfully. How does Fortune Brands – widely-thought to have the acquisition in the bag – feel about the announcement? How does Vin & Sprit feel about its new owner? But then, how does Pernod feel about inheriting Fortune as a sitting tenant in the US, where Fortune co-operates Future Brands, the distributor for V&S’ Absolut vodka brand? And, what does the future hold for Maxxium, in which V&S holds a 25% stake? And, what of the future for Stolichnaya? More colourfully, how does Diageo feel about Pernod’s claim that the French company is now the number one global premium spirits company, with 27% market share? Diageo is reluctant to get involved in a tit-for-tat row over numbers, I’m told, but the reverberations of the acquisition will run far and wide for quite some time to come. Rest assured, however, that you’re in the right place to hear all about it, first, here on just-drinks. We’ll have an analysis, providing all the answers to all your questions, in a matter of hours. Talking of big coverage, we’ve also got an interview with the CEO of PepsiCo International coming your way this week. We’ve been busy as well, you see. Until next time...
