The brewing world has been a colourful one of late. What with InBev making the noteworthy move to comment specifically on its FY performance in the UK, as well as further speculation surrounding a counter-bid for Scottish & Newcastle, the sector looks set to hog the headlines for most of March, if not longer. On first viewing, InBev’s full-year results, released last week, look pretty healthy, with both sales and profits heading north. But, with the UK proving problematic, the brewer, which recently changed the leadership at its unit in the country, chose to give a full and frank explanation of its travails here. The statement served as confirmation of rumblings that all is not rosy for InBev in the UK. But, it’s certainly not for want of trying, with the brewer actively looking to turn things around, with a new Artois family addition and presence improvement for its Beck’s Vier brand. With the fat lady lining up to belt out a ditty for Scottish & Newcastle, meanwhile, speculation last week linked Anheuser-Busch with a possible move to trump Carlsberg and Heineken. The rumours followed earlier talk that SABMiller was considering doing the same, leading to the UK-based brewer distancing itself from the possibility. If you ask me (and why wouldn’t you?), Anheuser-Busch has probably got bigger fish to fry in 2008 – no offence to S&N. Super-consolidation seems to be the next, inevitable step for the world’s brewers. A-B and InBev bunking up? The odds are short, I’ll wager. Until next time...
