One of the (oh, so many) joys of working on a news website is the immediacy of the medium. Any twist and turn in a story, we can run an update and get it to you, dear reader, in a matter of minutes.

Witness, as an example, the continuing saga of Scottish & Newcastle. No sooner had S&N agreed to meet-up with Carlsberg and Heineken to discuss the European brewers’ plans to buy the company, than the UK brewer told us some of the conditions they have in place before its board will recommend any offer.

Not only that, but we also took another closer look at how this may all finish.

We appear to be approaching the endgame of this one - the initial deadline from the UK Takeover Panel of today (21 January) has been extended to Thursday (24 January) - and you can rest assured that we’ll get the full story to you first.

Another example of the need for speed came when Young’s said it was dropping Stella Artois from its UK pub chain last week. We got that story up, put in the call and got a rather interesting (nay, ominous?) response from InBev in the UK about the move.

Aside from our take on how the brewers’ battle is shaping up, in the features section last week, we ran an interview with the CEO of Canada’s Corby Distilleries, Con Constandis. The company had a colourful 2007, and we’ll be reporting back to you on how 2008 treats the former part-owner of the Tia Maria liqueur brand.

Finally, don’t forget our weekly round-up of the top stories on just-drinks last week.

Until next time...

CBC - If you ask me... S&N. Carlsberg and Heineken [MEM]

I doubt that it is of the Dutch variety, but John Dunsmore, Sir Brian Stewart and the S&N board have certainly displayed courage over the last few months as they have held firm on calls to accept the takeover approach from Carlsberg and Heineken.

just-drinks’ review of 2007

The past year has been an eventful one across all four of the sectors covered by just-drinks. While 2007 has been notable for its lack of a truly major acquisition event, there was never a shortage of speculation. This briefing reviews the major stories from the beer, spirits, wine and soft drinks markets to hit the just-drinks headlines up to the middle of December 2007, including what the website’s pundits and columnists had to say about some of the notable events of the year.
