We’re entering what looks like being the home stretch for the first big acquisition of 2008 this week. Last week, Carlsberg and Heineken’s push to buy Scottish & Newcastle had yet more twists and turns, with S&N rejecting the third proposed offer from the European consortium. At GBP7.80, S&N again said no, while maintaining its refusal to sit and formally discuss any move. “Come back at GBP8.00 (per share) and then we’ll talk,” was the UK brewer’s sign-off. With the UK Takeover Panel’s deadline only a week away (21 January), expect this story to head the news for a few days more at least.

For further details on S&N’s claim for full ownership of Baltic Beverages Holding, its Eastern European joint venture with Carlsberg, click here. Also features-wise, our regular columnist, Chris Losh, took a lighter look at what 2008 holds for the drinks industry.

And, of course, don’t forget our new feature on just-drinks 2008, our round-up of what’s been most popular on the site each week – click here for last week’s.

Until next time...
