The latest twist in the Scottish & Newcastle saga threw up a startling comment or two last week.

When Carlsberg and Heineken issued their latest, improved offer for the UK brewer on Thursday, the two European brewers surely didn't expect S&N to dismiss the proposal out of hand on the same day?

Not only that, but when just-drinks spoke to S&N the following day, the UK brewer attacked Carlsberg and Heineken, describing them as "pathetic" and "desperate". And, as Carlsberg concedes that the two sides don't get on quite as well as they used to, the Danish company reacted to the outburst with a rather more well-mannered "no comment".

Looks like there's yet more colour to add to this picture before it is complete.

Elswehere on the acquisition front, it looks like the beginning (rather than the end - who knows when that will be) is in sight for the sale of Vin & Sprit. Fortune Brands, most people's favourite to snap up the Absolut brand owner, has manoeuvred itself into what it hopes is pole position, with the divestment of its US wine division to Constellation Brands.

Meanwhile, the anti-alcohol lobby in the UK re-ignited the ‘tax it out of ‘em’ argument, when it comes to alcohol abuse in the country. Group managing editor, and former editor of just-drinks, Chris Brook-Carter (remember him), gave us his two penn’orth on the matter in our features section. Also on the comment front, Chris Losh contested last week that the Fairtrade sector of the wine industry was one that continues to offer high rewards – if only wine companies woke up to the concept.

Until next time...

The Losh Cause – Fairtrade wine has a fair way to go [MEM]

Chris Losh attended three UK wine trade events this week and found that the most interesting and perhaps the most important – a tasting of Fairtrade wines – attracted the poorest turnout, indicating that the trade is yet to wake up to the significance and opportunities offered by the growing interest in Fairtrade products.

Online food and drinks retailing in the UK

In this month's briefing we examine the development of online grocery shopping. We look specifically at the growing online wine market, and examine both the activities of major grocery chains and specialist drinks retailers in the online sector. As would be expected from a sector expanding from a small base, the online food and beverage market is showing strong year-on-year growth. We provide an overview of the key facilitators for this growth, and include chapters on innovation and development, the marketing of wine online and the importance of an online presence. Market share by retailer for the online grocery sector is also provided along with company profiles for Tesco, Sainsbury's, Ocado/Waitrose, Asda, Majestic Wine, Oddbins/Nicolas and Wine Cellar.
