We all have our bad weeks. Missed your targets? Lost out on a promotion? The weekend can’t come soon enough, can it? Wither, then, poor C&C Group. The Irish company, whose Magners cider brand became arguably the most exciting drinks brand of the year last year in the UK, has seen 2007 fail to live up to 2006. And last week was probably the company’s worst for a while. Not only did C&C issue its second profit warning in the space of three weeks, but then the firm saw two different brokers take an axe to its share rating. C&C noted that the really rather awful weather we’ve been having in the UK these past few weeks was hammering sales of the cider brand. To pile misery upon misery, then, the week drew to a close for C&C with the announcement that it was laying off, albeit temporarily, around 70 workers at its recently expanded production plant in Ireland. Yup, Friday afternoon was probably a welcome moment at the company. But all is not lost – come the weekend, come the sun. Indeed, Sunday (5 August) was the hottest day of the year so far in the UK – and Saturday wasn’t that close behind either. Our summer has arrived, finally, it would seem, And here’s hoping the coming of the sun has put a spring back in the step of the company’s workforce. It certainly did in mine. Until next time...
