The Easter weekend has just passed, giving many of us a short break before moving up a gear as the summer sales season looms. It’s been a lively first quarter in all of the drinks sectors, and reporting on it has certainly kept us out of trouble. And so, we enter the next chapter of 2007 with Scottish & Newcastle running the gamut of takeover obsessives, Constellation bemoaning a tough UK market (but still producing growth), Bacardi and Pernod still going at it over Havana, and Pepsi and Coca-Cola poised to duke it out in Brazil. All colourful stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. On the horizon, meanwhile, we have the London International Wine & Spirit Fair next month. I’m sure, like us, your plans for the event began quite a while ago. To give you a quick heads-up, we’ll be running our daily planner page from 1 May right up to the event, giving the low-down on who’s doing what, where and when during the fair. So, get your PR departments in the loop, and prepare them to tell us your news. The Easter break has also brought a changing of the guard here at just-drinks, with our news editor, Dean Best, heading for the bright lights of the editor position at our sister site just-food. Dean’s 18 months here at just-drinks has seen the number of exclusive stories we’ve broken soar, and he’ll be missed… but just for a bit. We have a week to clear his desk, before we reveal our ‘new’ news editor to you all. The change will be seamless, I assure you. Watch this space. Until next time... Pot of Gould – Bacardi and Pernod duke it out in Havana [MEM] Bacardi has been engaged in a legal battle with Pernod Ricard over the rights to the Havana Club trademark for years. But Patience Gould believes the US-based spirits giant is shooting itself in the foot, appearing to be a corporate bully while drawing attention to the primary characteristic that sets Havana Club apart from its own world-beating brand - its Cuban origin. Reports from the World Health Organisation find that, measured on a per capita basis, Europe has the highest intake of alcohol in the world and it’s getting higher still. This month's briefing looks at the European Commission’s long-awaited communication (formal policy paper) on alcohol, and the proposed reform of the common market organisation for wine. It also looks at other areas of EU legislation, such as labeling, advertising and excise duty minimums.
